By Bob Oliver
50th Reunion Chair

Planning has begun for the Reunion Book. In accord with the overwhelming preference expressed in response to my class questionnaire, we will have a traditional printed book. John Stewart, reunion book editor, is assembling a committee to help. John has a list of the names of those who have volunteered. If you have not yet volunteered, feel free to do so and contact John directly at jstewart@wustl.edu. (Tel. 314-533-0665)

A kick-off reunion meeting will be held in New York at the Yale Club on Thursday, January 13, 2011, at 5:00 to 7:30 PM EST, with refreshments.  Any interested classmate is invited to attend along with those who have already volunteered. We will review planning to date and discuss the Book.  A telephone call in number will be provided for those not in the New York area or unable to attend.

Al Chambers is underway on the planning with our Smith College counterpart for our joint survey.

David Scharff has agreed to coordinate planning for the class panels.    We will not be able to accommodate all the requests but among the most popular topics were the following:

  • Retirement, post-retirement, transitions, aging
  • Finance and business
  • Education
  • Careers
  • What Yale means to us
  • Environment and climate
  • Wives panel (topics to be developed)
  • Changes at Yale over 50 years and the future
  • Travel
  • Twenty-five years of the joint Yale-Smith survey

Thus far, Tim Hall and Clay Alderfer are working on a “careers” panel. Ed Strohbehn has agreed to chair a discussion about environment and climate. And Ed Goodman is considering a business and finance panel. More news as developments progress.

Many classmates have expressed interest in tours of Yale’s new facilities including the new West Campus. We will have this opportunity. I will also coordinate with AYA to maximize the benefit of what university-wide presentations and lectures it is planning. In addition, many asked for a presentation on Yale’s endowment. I intend to invite David Swenson to meet informally with our class and hope this can be accomplished.

More good news: David Finkle has agreed to coordinate entertainment. Joe Holmes and his band will be performing Saturday evening. Our Whiffs will sing Friday evening. I expect classmates in the Yale Glee Club also to sing. David is planning other presentations including an encore appearance of “Weeden, Finkle and Fay.”

Howard Kolodny will chair a golf committee. I am looking for someone interested in organizing a tennis tournament.

Volunteers and ideas are welcomed. Let me hear from you.
