REILLY: YALE MEANS A LOT TO US – $41.5 MILLION

“The class of ’62 distinguished itself in its generosity to Yale 50 years out. We set the all-time record for unrestricted gifts toward current operations at $1.063 million. Rick Levin had stressed to me at the start that with the buffeting the endowment suffered in 2008 and the resulting downturn in what it spins off for operations, currently-available money had a high priority. We responded!

“As for the total class gift, our amount of $45.1 million puts us 6th among all 50th reunion class gifts. Given that our past few years encompassed hard going and depressed values, we should be proud! In promoting a generous gift from one of our classmates, I reminded him that he was richer than God. His response caught the tenor of the times: ‘in this environment even God’s feeling the pinch.’

“Thanks, guys! It has been a pleasure to work with you and see how much Yale has meant to you, and how much you want it to matter to others down the road!”

William Reilly, Chair of Special Gifts.
